November 19, 2008
Individuals are receiving phone messages to contact a particular company immediately regarding a debt collection. Once the 1-800 number is called, they are told "In order to ensure you're directed to the correct party, please enter your SSN."
There are so many ways for perpetrators to attempt to get personal information, including the use of auto-dialers. It is important to remember to limit the release of personal information in order to protect yourself from fraud. Note: Air Force Federal Credit Union will never ask you to provide account numbers, passwords, Social Security Numbers or other private or personal information about you through e-mail or by fax. If you receive a request for this information, you should delete.
Additionally, formal complaints concerning any suspected fraudulent e-mail can be filed with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) at www.ic3.gov. The IFCC is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center. For more information, please visit our Security Center.
